Have you ever wondered what would happen if you were to breed a Black Ocellaris and a Snowflake Ocellaris together? We did and we wound up producing what became known as the Black Ice Snowflake. Our goal in crossing those two strains of Ocellaris was not to raise Black Ice though. We had something else in mind entirely, a solid Black Ocellaris with white Snowflake markings. Don’t get us wrong, Black Ice Snowflakes are stunning fish, we just weren’t ready to settle so we set out on our way. . .
Kelly Green Psammocora from ORA is an intense green branching coral from the Psammocora genus. These corals are sometimes referred to as sandpaper corals because of the fine grainy appearance they have when their polyps are not extended. When its polyps are fully extended Kelly Green Psammocora has a rich velvety look. This is one of the brightest green SPS corals out there, it really grabs your attention when passing by a tank.
We are excited to announce that as of June 30, 2011, Oceans, Reefs & Aquariums (ORA) and its affiliate Marshall Islands Mariculture Farm (MIMF) are under new ownership. The brand and operations you have come to respect and trust are not changing. In fact, we are committed to continuing ORA’s mission to research and produce, through sustainable aquaculture, the world’s largest collection of saltwater fish, corals and invertebrates for the marine aquarium trade. Our goal remains to provide the modern marine aquarist healthy, attractive alternatives to wild caught specimens. The change in ownership allows ORA to not only focus on the products currently offered, but also expand operations, research, and product offerings.
In the fall of 2009, while sorting through a tank of young Ocellaris clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris), several unusual fish were discovered by one of our hatchery technicians. Continue reading

Last spring Charlie Mazel from NightSea came to visit ORA and he brought his specialty camera equipment with him. NightSea specializes in viewing and photography equipment that reveals the hidden dimension of fluorescence in corals and other subjects. Charlie’s camera setup had a special excitation filter for the external flash that converted it from a source of white light to blue light. His lens had a special filter that blocked the reflected blue light and allowed the fluorescence to be captured. Continue reading
